I was a student at U of Pitts in 1978. I just recorded the things I saw & heard on a 2 hr walk around town on a fall evening. Good or bad, let me know whatcha think.
In Pittsburgh P-A,
The power walks, the money talks,
And the big shots get their way.
The steel mills belch their grime and smoke
As a kid on the street smokes a "J".
When you live in the smog,
The hookers work, the hubbies flirt,
And everyone "puts on the Dog".
The "shark" on the corner has money to loan,
While a girl in the park takes a jog.
Homes are for sale and apartments for let.
Preachers go begging; delinquents go egging,
And a cop on the beat takes a bet.
A crowd’s bombarded with smoke from a bus,
As a woman calls out to her pet.
The traffic resembles a motor stampede.
Display windows crash; the neons flash
While a Boy Scout does a good deed.
A kid calls mommy; a girl cries "Help",
As a tramp lets a collie bleed.
There’s the face of a lady whose life’s in the pits,
As church bells ring; the beggars sing,
And a drunk has his eye on some tits.
A doctor turns his nose away;a waitress puts her hose away,
And a man with a chaw just spits.
A bakery’s fragrance mates with the street
Where manequins gloat and poet’s quote,
And a pimp goes shopping for meat.
The Steelers continue their winning streak,
But the Pirates go down in defeat.
Music comes blaring from passing cars
As women stare, and men compare,
An old fighter tells of his scars.
A junkie gets "hit", while a stogie gets lit
And a drunk chins-up to the bar.
That’s Pittsburgh P-A
Where the power walks, the money talks,
And the Big Shots get their way.
The steel mills vomit their grime and smoke
As a kid on the street smokes a "J".
I think it’s excellent.
And I most certainly think you should be writing more poetry.
I honestly felt as though I was walking through the streets myself.
Captivating with beautiful descriptions.
Keep writing.
