Today I was driving on the motor way when my car started making a weird noise. I got off the motorway and turned onto my girlfriend’s brother’s estate when the car cut out. I restarted it and got in front of his house when it cut out again. I called out RAC who then checked the levels of the car. Apparently the oil level was a lot worse than I thought and the engine was basically gone. The RAC said that I would probably be able to get back home at a snail’s pace if I avoid the motorway. So we headed home and now my car lies in it’s driveway grave.
I spoke to a mechanic I knew about getting a replacement engine but he said it wouldn’t be worth it as the car would never seem the same and I’d probably end up having to buy all sorts of new parts for it, by which time I may as well have bought another used car, which I’m planning to do.
Now, I’m not sure what I will do with the car now. Do I arrange for someone to pick it up to have it scrapped? What do I have to tell the DVLA? Just that the car’s outright broken? Also, what will happen with regards to the insurance? Will the company cancel the remainder of the policy or will I have to continue paying the ridiculous amount I am now for a car that no longer runs?
I know I’ve babbled, but today’s been pretty horrendous and I’m now extremely stressed so any advice would be awesome ![]()
1 – There are specific car recyclers that will pick the car up and pay you for the scrap. They are in the yellow pages and some advertise in local papers. They have to be licenced now.
2. The V5C (log book) has all the details on it of what to do when you sell it for scrap – make sure this is completed properly when it is picked up – do not be fobbed off with oh we will take care of that – make sure it is all done there and then
3. If you intend to have another car the policy can just be altered to suit that when you have got the details. If you are not having a new car then i will have to be cancelled. Do not expect to get money back and do expect to pay a cancellatio/admin fee.
it depends on your policy terms but i can cancle my policy at any time. and i dont think if your car is writen off meaning its totaled you still have to pay for the policy regarding that car. As for getting rid of it depending if you are into this type of stuff i would take the car apart and sell it for parts. You would have to pay about 1000 for someone to come take it but if you part it you can make about 1000 lol good luck

Talk about a bad day! I can understand your stress.
Normally you can reduce coverage to parking insurance. You need to talk to your broker or agent about which form is best for you. If your vehicle does not have a lot of value then you might drop down to specified perils and give up vanadalism coverage. It is significantly less.
Be aware that if you are paying monthly payments that you might have one more payment before the change goes into effect. Sometimes it takes a while for the paperwork to process.
To do this keeps your policy in force and you still have a driving record as long as you don’t wait too long to replace the vehicle.
Here in Alberta we have to get a safety check done for any vehicle 12 years old and older. You might buy the next vehicle conditional on it passing the safety test for road worthiness.
Good luck.

It seems that you are to blame for the condition of the car because you didn’t bother to check the oil level in the engine. Until you decide what to do, you have to complete the SORN declaration in the registration form and send it to the DVLA.If you decide to scrap it later then fill out the part of the registration form for that and send it off to the DVLA. If you are paying your car Insurance by monthly payments, then you do have to continue paying the amount you signed for until it is paid in full.I have had replacement engines fitted in the past and never had a problem with them. You need to find out if you need a "Short engine" or a full engine as a replacement.

Hi,
If your car is shot and not driveable any longer and you do not plan on getting it fixed, you can either place an add to sell "as is" for parts or someone else can maybe have money or want to fix it. Sometimes there are listings in your local newspaper or magazine paper for people who purchase vehicles whether running or not. You can check on that alos. As far as your insurance. if you are purchasing another vehicle shortly, I would not cancel your current policy. You can just change the vehicle on the existing policy. If you currently have longevity credit for being with this company for sometime, you will loose the credit if you cancel the policy and then start over with the new car. Therefore, your premium would be higher. Also, if you have received any tickets or been in any accidents that are not accountable on your current policy, if you cancel it and start over with another vehicle, your premium could go up due to your driving record. Also, if the Insurance Company has raised their rates since your last renewal, if you cancel and get another policy later when you get another car, your premium will be higher. Remember, the Liability portion of the premium stays the same no matter what kind of vehicle you purchase. It is the Comprehensive and Collision Coverages that reflect the year make and model of the vehicle based on the cost new of the vehicle, statistics of the vehicle and other factors are involved. These coverages can have a higher premium than your current car if you purchase a more expensive newer vehicle. Also, if you currently have Comprehensive and Collision Coverages on your current vehicle that is not running, you can call your agent to have those removed as you no longer need those coverages. That would save you money as you might get a return in the mail. If you only have Liability Coverage presently, I would leave it all in place and purchase another vehicle as soon as possible. Hope this helps.

Oh, Lord, what a day! Regarding scrapping it, you have to make sure DVLA is aware of this and there is provision on the V5, the scrappie will give you a certificate. You’l need to ring around to find one who will collect it. This is the website of just one scrapper, and tells you how it’s done: http://www.scrapcar.co.uk/
You could, however, sell it for parts and if that is the case it’s the same as a "normal" sale, you and the purchaser fill in the relevant parts on the V5. If there is any unused tax you can surrender this and declare the car SORN – it’ll be perfectly legal on your driveway.
Regarding the insurance, tell your insurers that it is no longer on the road and no longer needs to be insured. I suspect, though, that you a making monthly payments to pay off the annual premium for the cover you took out in the first place, and thus will have to continue these payments until it’s all paid off. They will tell you what happens.

You say that you are going to get another car, keep the policy running because if you cancel you could lose that years no claims and it just saves time when you change cars. If you are scrapping the car just send off the slip to the DVLA saying it is being scrapped and any breakers who come and pick your car up make sure they give you a certificate of destruction and keep hold of it for future reference just in case the breakers put a new engine in the car and sell it.
You did not say what car and how old the car is, in some cases you can find a similar engine from breakers for £100-300 depending on what type of car you have and fitted for £250ish. My sisters Ford Focus on an 2002 engine went bang and she was able to get an engine and fitted for £400 and it was an identical engine to what she had only it was working.
