Is it easy to convert from R12 refrigerant to presently available gas?

I purchased a used ford motor home that uses R12. I’m told I can convert it with a kit. Am I getting in over my head or should I try to tackle this project? Is it necessary to “flush” the old system first? Thanks for any good advice.

This is a fairly affordable conversion comparatively speaking, given the cost of R-12, but not one I would recommend for a DIY'er, or even a fairly good mechanic without the proper equipment. The system should be flushed and then vacuumed with an electric vacuum pump before filling with R-134.

I don't do much AC work myself anymore, but as best as I can recall, the compressor and orifice tube have to be replaced, along with the normal recharge procedures. Most of the rest of the original system is retained. Maybe $200-$300? But that's just a rough guess.

Last I heard, R-12 alone was running like $50 a pound, if you can even find it. Further manufacture or importation has been banned, and all that's left is what's left.
